What is PTSA?

PTSA is an acronym for the Parent Teacher Student Association. The West Valley Middle School PTSA is a branch of the Tennessee PTA, which is, in turn, a branch of the National Congress of Parents and Teachers (National PTA). The PTSA/PTA is a non-profit organization which seeks to unite the forces of home, school, and community on behalf of children and youth. Activities vary between chapters, but local PTSAs/PTAs often help schools purchase needed supplies, find classroom and school volunteers, keep school grounds clean, provide seminars or programs for parents and children on practical or interesting subjects, and hold teacher appreciation events.

At the national and state level, PTA collaborates with law makers to help ensure that every child has the opportunity to receive a quality education and that parents are included in the school decision making process. Many times, when a parent group is needed to give input or to sit on  committees,  lawmakers will look to National and Tennessee PTA for guidance.
