September is Attendance Awareness Month

A word from your school social worker on school attendance

Starting back to school is a good time to think about your child’s attendance to school.  Missing 10% or more school days (18 days of school in a year) is considered chronically absent.  The average student in Tennessee misses no more than 6 days in a school year.

Did you know?

  • By 6th grade, absenteeism is one of three signs that a student may drop out of high school.
  • By 9th grade, regular and high attendance is a better predictor of graduation rates than 8th grade test scores.
  • Missing 18 days a year or 2 days a month, can drastically affect a student’s academic success.
  • Absences can be a sign that a student is losing interest in school, struggling with school work, or facing some other potentially serious difficulty.
  • Even as children grow older and more independent, families play a key role in making sure students get to school safely every day and understand why attendance is so important for success in school and on the job.
  • Attendance is an important life skill that will help your child graduate from college and keep a job.

What you can do:

  • Make school attendance a priority, talk to your child about the importance of it and make daily attendance to school the expectation.
  • Try not to schedule dental and medical appointments during the school day.
  • Don’t let your child stay home unless truly sick.  Just because your child doesn’t feel good doesn’t mean they should stay home from school.  Throwing up or running a high fever are good reasons to stay home from school.  Having a headache or feeling tired are not good reasons.
  • Help your child stay engaged at school:  Stay on top of their academic progress as well as their social contacts.  Encourage meaningful afterschool activities.
  • Plan family vacations on breaks from school rather than at times when they will need to be absent from school.
  • If your child or family is experiencing things that makes him/her struggle with school attendance please communicate this with WVMS’s school social worker, Katie Allen for help and/or support.
  • Know and follow KCS’s attendance policy:  If your child is too sick to attend school or has another valid excuse for being absent, please send in a note within 5 days of them returning to school.  According to school board policy, a student can have unlimited medical or other official documentation and up to 10 parent notes each year to excuse an absence.  Excuse notes are to be turned in to their homeroom teacher.  This communication helps us to better address attendance problems.  The complete School Board Policy for attendance can be found on the KCS website.
